By Reece Rogers

We were a family of dirt,
Loving all our dirt-poor ancestors,
Grandparents’ feet caked with Oklahoma mud,
Vanishing clouds of red dust,
Aunt’s toe dipped in the Florida silt,
Exposing her Sunflower State tattoo,
Dad’s rural high school football team,
Practicing in their grass-stained jerseys,
Mom’s campfire burned as we laughed together,
Catching lightning bugs in Grandma’s canning jars.
