These selected hand-cut collages are inspired by the idea of exiting the world we know and entering an entirely new environment. Equal parts whimsical and apocalyptic, this work takes the observer on a tour of a somewhat indescribable future — a future unknown, where we can’t control what will happen, or even whether we will remain part of the equation. These collages depict a world that we’ve so far manipulated that we’ve entirely abandoned what we know as “natural.”

Sarah Butler is a mixed-media artist based in Ithaca, NY. Her work is inspired by how we as people react and grow from our surrounding environments — the natural, the built, and the societal. This exploration examines how cultural ideals shape identity, how the natural environment affects the human psyche, how bold and blunt reactions to U.S. politics can shape art.
